SCRIP is the Stonycreek-Conemaugh River Improvement Project, a coalition of grass-roots groups and local resource agencies working to restore and promote the Upper Conemaugh watershed. The Upper Conemaugh watershed encompasses portions of Cambria and Somerset Counties in Western Pennsylvania, a region riddled with signs of environmental degradation from past industry, particularly coal mining. Once considered one of the most polluted watersheds in the Commonwealth, the Conemaugh River and its tributaries are recovering from pollution, due in part to the restoration and conservation efforts of local, state, and federal agencies and non-profit organizations. While some sites are celebrated as success stories, others still need considerable work to restore aquatic life, while some need rehabilitated to ensure the gains seen are not lost.
